Hello Kittens,

Here we are again at another Thursday Thirteen where I've had things on my mind. This week it was books I still need to get (my To Be Bought List is ridiculous) and character crushes which I'm a few posts behind on. So for your Thursday Thirteen viewing pleasure I have combined them and this week we'll be looking at 13 character crushes from books I love. For those of you who have been privy to other Character Cruch conversations, you'll be stunned to know that a full nine out of thirteen, (8.5 if you want to argue Ash), aren't vampires. I keep telling you I'm quite varied. *grin*. Enjoy...

13 Literary Character Crushes of Mine

The following descrips are intentionally vague to avoid being spoilers so bear with me. As always there are links to guide you to more information. :)

1. David ~ The Weather Warden Series by Rachel Caine ~ A captured djinn who must fight a beloved friend for the greater good; David appeals to my undiagnosed Savior Complex. Most likely all of them do, but I’m admitting it here so I can forgo that for the rest of the list.

2. Kisten ~ The Hallows Series by Kim Harrison ~ A living vampire and scion to sick twisted bastard, Kist just wants to be loved by someone as strong or stronger than himself for the comfort that can come from such a thing.

3. Stu Redman ~ The Stand by Stephen King ~ Human survivor of a viral apocalypse who remains a man of integrity even when facing the bitter end. I have no shame in saying that Gary Sinise just made this a forever and always crush after the mini-series came out.

4. Nick Andros ~ The Stand by Stephen King ~ Another Human survivor of the viral apocalypse who is left facing the worlds end unable to hear and protecting and traveling with a man named Tom Cullen who is unable to write down his thoughts. Nick was the first “pure soul” I ever read about and will forever be my bar of “good” that other characters must live up to. (M-o-o-n, that spells good.)

5. Henry Fitzroy ~ The Blood Books by Tanya Huff ~ The bastard offspring of Henry VIII, Henry Fitzroy is among my favorite vampire characters. He is what he is and he lives without regret for that, yet hasn’t become a monster because of it. He is flawed and regal and young and wise and all things you want a vampire to be so that he’s relatable yet mysterious. Tanya Huff did a wonderful job and Kyle Schmid portrays him beautifully on Lifetime’s Blood Ties

6. Harry Dresden ~ The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher ~ Totally the fault of the Sci-Fi Channel (and how they suck for not picking up another season). I had just come to want to know more about this wizard named Harry from a short story in an anthology I was reading. Then the show premiered and I was hooked. I love the books and loved the way Paul Blacksthorne portrayed him. I will follow this show to any station that picks it up. Someone call USA Network, it can air after Dead Zone.

7. Odd Thomas ~ The Odd Thomas Series by Dean Koontz ~ A medium being haunted by Elvis among others, Odd lives his life as a short-order cook, helping the departed when he can and focusing on the happiness of his relationship with his fiance. When diabolical things come to his small, quiet town, Odd steps up to stop something no short-order cook should ever ask to be faced. I loved him nearly from page one and wanted to be among those he shared his secret with to help him get through it all.

8. Barinthus ~ The Merry Gentry Series by Laurell K. Hamilton ~ A Sidhe once known as Manannan Mac Lir, this fallen god of the sea is the most fit to sit on the Unseelie thrown as king  and the only one oath bound to never do so. He can’t win, yet he gets my vote every time.

9. Thomas Argeneau ~ The Argeneau Vampire Series by Lynsay Sands ~ Among the youngest of the Argeneau clan, Thomas is a born vampire who is very much a product of the modern age. I loved his humor and supportiveness from the very first book and I can’t wait until February when he finds his own Happily Ever After in Vampires Are Forever

10. Ash ~ The Dark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon ~ Dark-Hunter, Atlantean, Demi-God? Whatever he is believed to be, Ash, or Acheron Parthenopaeus if you prefer, is the leader and voice of guidance to every Dark-Hunter. None know the price he pays for even the smallest favors, and that’s the way he prefers it. He is the most powerful among them, perhaps the most powerful creature still walking the earth, and yet he is bound and trapped and made as helpless by it any would be in his stead. For all his power, my Savoir-Complex kicks into full gear here without doubt.

11. Asher ~ The Anita Blake Books by Laurell K. Hamilton ~ For those who have read it what calls me about Asher is clear, he needs someone of his own and he needs to see himself the way that Anita and Jean-Claude see him. Moody, broody Vampires aren’t really my thing, but I can’t help but feel for Asher. I’d want to make him happy even if I wouldn’t want to necessarily take him home without a therapist and lithium Rx.

12. Ashlar ~ The Mayfair Witches Saga by Anne Rice ~ (Yes, I did the trinity of names on purpose) A Taltos, a superhuman being of legend, Ashlar is thought the last of his kind and spends the more recent of his untold years as a multi-millionaire to a toy empire. Toys, he in part makes for children he will never have. I’m a sucker for lonely characters which is why vampires appeal to me so deeply. I wanted Ashlar to find happiness and he remained a lasting character long after the last page was turned.

13. Lewis ~ The Weather Warden Series by Rachel Caine ~ I end as I began, but The Weather Warden Series is just that good. Lewis is a Weather Warden of extraordinary power and extraordinary compassion. I liked him from his first moment on stage and can’t help but want him to “get the girl” as much as I love David and want him to get the girl as well. Can’t they all just get along? One of the first things we're taught in kindergarten is to share and there's definitely not enough of that going on here. *Wink*

And there you have it. If you've been around before you recognize some of the names and series, that's intentional. Some of the above are new to many of you and this is all part of my plan to make my favorites in to new favorites of others because that's what you do with a good thing. Happy TT. :)

I reread the Mayfair Witches every other year or so as I need the inspiration to know my complicated histories and such will actually work as novels. :)

Thanks for coming by.

I'm cracking up at the idea of a medium haunted by Elvis.

Happy TT.

They really are some great characters. You can tell the skill of an author when you mourn and celebrate with people who have never lived outside the pages of their books. :)

Thanks for the return visit.

Those were beautiful character summaries and made me wish I'd read some of the books. The "Odd Thomas" one sounds particularly interesting.

Thanks for visiting us at Buck Naked Politics.

Wow, nice.
I haven't read many of the books you mention here, but your descriptions make me want to add some of them to my wishlist. Coming from me, who is not even a vampire fan (except when they're written by Joss Whedon) this is quite something. ;)
The only characters I know are Stu Redman and Nick Andros, because that book happens to be among my all-time favorites. I whole-heartedly agree about Stu and Gary Sinise's portrayal of him. With Nick is is a bit different. From the books I somehow always had this picture of him being black in my mind (don't ask me why). Then seeing him being played by Rob Lowe totally confused me. Besides, he is way too innocent for me to develop a crush on him. ;)

If you get a chance, most definitely pick up Odd Thomas and take a glimpse into a life were all he wants is a little peace to go with the quiet of Pico Mundo...

Thanks for the return visit :)

YOUR To be Bought list is huge? Mine just grew!! I'm loving the Weather Warden series, too -- I've finished #3 and am waiting for #4 -- and Kim Harrison, too. Jim Butcher's here waiting for me to unbury it from Mt. TBR (that's to be read, of course), and ... and ... I have to confess: I've not read either Sherrilyn Kenyon or Tanya Huff. But I've got a Huff book here!! Does that count?

I'm soooooo behind, I know. It's a scary thing.

I'm not going to ask you why you thought Nick was black because Stephen King has a thing about the black mystic or black angelic character that is pivotal to the story. Nick must have given off that vibe so I'll take it. :)

I wasn't a fan of Rob Lowe as Nick, but at least I was expecting someone close to to Rob, (Although I believe Nick was described as blond or close, so Chad Lowe would have been closer) so I was able to let it go and then he surprised me with completely erasing my doubts. I was very happy with how the mini-series turned out. I came away with the least complaints of any King adaptation. I think only the mini-series of the Shining was closer to its book than The Stand. (Not counting Misery or Dolores Claiborne which did really well for what they were).

As to Nick being too innocent for a crush...my spectrum in vast and varied. Centuries old vampires who revel in the night, to Nick Andros, it all works for me. LOL.

Thanks for coming by, Samulli. Always look forward to hearing from you. :)

Which Huff book? I need to find someone who has read Tony's books to let me know how they are before I extend my TBBL further yet. LOL

I'm rereading Weather Wardern #5 so I can read #6 which I just bought a few days ago. Of course, I haven't had time to get passed page three yet with everything else going on. *Headshake* Too many things and not enough hours in a day.

Thanks for the return visit, Susan :)

I like David & Lewis from the Weather Warden series, but my heart belongs to Harry Dresden. His brother's a close second.

Excellent list! I was so mad when reading the Stand - I loved Nick and the rock star. God it's been so long that I don't even remember his name.

I'll have to think up what subject I'm going to do for my list.

Larry Underwood who was climbing the charts with "Baby Can You Dig Your Man" just as the virus hit.

(Yeah, there's a reason I couldn't learn calculus, there just wasn't enough room in my head with everything else that stuck. *grin*)
