Thursday Thirteen 15th Edition
Nov. 22nd, 2007 09:22 amHappy Thanksgiving Kittens,
Some of you may notice that I'm a little late to the game today. Usually I get this up between midnight and 3 am and then cruise about for a time until heading for bed right about now. But I'm spending time with My Sweetie today which meant actually being awake the same time he is on his day off. :)
Where there will be turkey and such, we won't be having a traditional Thanksgiving this year. In fact this will be the first one we're having with just the two of us and no other obligations. Since you've already been treated to things I'm grateful for over the last several weeks--and you'll no doubt have a slew of gratitude to take in on other blogs today--I chose to take inspiration from our day and go with Thirteen New Traditions You Can Incorporate For Thanksgiving.
See what you might like to do next year for yourselves. :)
Enjoy.

13 New Thanksgiving Traditions To Try Out
1. Try a dessert from a different region or culture ~ My family is from Louisiana so I always have sweet potato pie during the holidays. Today I went ahead to try pumpkin like the rest of the country....Sweet Potato is better, but it was a good experience anyway.
2. Make it private ~ Carve out some time in the day or the night before to spend with a spouse, sweetie or child who doesn't get enough of your attention.
3. Pick a non-holiday movie to add to your holiday viewing ~ Personally I'll be watching Practical Magic. For other options, The Incredibles is debuting on NBC at 7pm central. Just go with whatever makes you happy that you've seen before so interruptions don't irritate you. *wink*
4. Cater it ~ There are several places, including most local grocery stores that offer to cook a full Thanksgiving meal. You need only give 48 to 72 hours notice. It takes pressure off the cooks while still making sure you get exactly what you want. We're going to do this next year.
5. Go out for dinner ~ I'm not sure about in your individual areas, but we have several family friendly restuarants around here that offer wonderful Thanksgiving day dinners,(and even a few with breakfast options for the holiday). It takes pressure off the cook like catering, without the clean-up or evil-calorie ridden-left overs. This is what we're thinking about today.
6. Buy Heat and Eat ~ Just as many stores will cook and deliver, others will cook and cool or freeze your turkey and sides so you can just heat them at home. This is what we have as a backup plan.
7. Brave the traffic and go out for a movie ~ This had been the plan but the weather turned against us. Hopefully everyone else trying this route has more success. Make sure to share what you saw.
8. Make the day about more than the game and dinner ~ Rotate what each person wants to do from breakfast on, so everyone has a part in the day.
9. Decide to be Happy rather than Right ~ Whatever holiday fights and family madness has wormed its way into your regular Thanksgiving, decide not to be a part of it. The moment an unresolved issue comes up that you know never gets resolved no matter how much it's mentioned--walk away. Concede, nod and smile, just move on. Make happiness the priority and let everything else fall away. This worked wonders when I put my foot down on it years ago and since it takes two to fight the fights disappeared.
10. Have a "Virtual Thanksgiving". ~ Pick a dish or two that you and a long distance friend will both have so you can spend the holiday "together". My shared treat will be Pomegranate Chip ice cream. :)
11. Go Organic and Farm Raised, one dish at a time if necessary. Switch out some of your favorites to support organic and free range farmers in your local area.
12. Go Healthy. Lower fat, higher fiber choices will leave you feeling better than you started out rather than comatose on the couch. And you'll avoid the holiday gain as well.
13. Have A Gratitude Breakfast ~ Why wait until the dinner table? Start the day with what you're thankful for so that after the stress of cooking and coordinating you can remember your intentions and what you want from the day.
Happy Thanksgiving To All Who Celebrate and Happy Thursday To Everyone Else. :)
