Crush of the Week
Dec. 21st, 2007 11:25 pm Hello Lovelies,
I was unsure as to whom to choose this week and as always it made me susceptible to the whimsy of the entertainment world. So my eyes turned to the movies coming out and all that which is a-buzz at the moment. As you know, it's the holiday season and that means Tim Burton and Tim Burton at Christmas can only mean one thing. Yes Kittens, from a narc keeping high school kids on the straight and narrow, to a drunken pirate searching for treasure and rum, from a scissor-handed cut-up to a cutthroat barber; this Friday's Crush of the Week is none other than that which is Johnny Depp.
If he's your thing too, come on in. If not, perhaps there will be greater luck next time. We'll see you next week. :)

One hardly knows where to begin in speaking about Johnny, his road has been as rocky as it is currently successful. First seen on screen as the unfortunate victim of a voracious bed in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street, Johnny shot to fame as officer Hanson in 1987's 21 Jumpstreet. His image was splashed over every teen magazine and he was an instant heartthrob both in America and overseas.
As was typical of the day, the flesh peddlers came about, wanting their piece of the media circus that was teen heartthrob-dom of the 1980's and early 90's. Never one to comform, Johnny withdrew from the hype and refused to conform to the clean cut, ready for prime-time image they wanted to cultivate for him. He purposely sought out unconventional roles in films such as the 1990 John Water's musical Cry Baby and Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. This was followed three years later with Benny and Joon and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, a film that netted Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination and much attention to Johnny's future. As if in spite, and year later in '94 he chose the even more unconventional role as the title character of Ed Wood skirts and all.
From there, things were a constant roller coaster ride. 1995 saw the high that was Don Juan Demarco and the low that was Nick of Time. There was Donnie Brasco and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas only to be see the low that was The Ninth Gate. Despite the ups and downs Johnny has never apologized for any of his projects, having chosen things that interested him rather than those guaranteed to strike box office goal.
He's played as many supporting roles as title roles because it was about the project rather than the recognition. He's pushed his range from love stories like Chocolat, to beautiful coming of age films like Finding Neverland, to indulgent odes to decadence like The Libertine. And he pulled off the lovely, utterly untrustworthy, and yet somehow believably redeemed Captain Jack Sparrow in a way no other actor could have. And now the man who brought Willy Wonka to life in a whole new way has gone from candy-maker to killer-cannibal in the title role of Sweeny Todd.
Everything the soon to be 45 year old has done has been accomplished without giving in to the pressures that would have made him into a disposable commodity. Coming out in a time where pretty meant push over, Johnny fought to be taken seriously without resorting to machismo or misogyny to prove his manliness. He's by no means a saint, as attested by multiple arrests and a confrontation or three over his privacy. But he's done a great deal with what he was dealt and I respect someone who could have relied on being good to look at and instead strove to be true to himself and develope his craft to the best of his ability.
All that said, I know what you're thinking...Onto the pictures. So be it. :)
Enjoy.
