Thursday Thirteen 19th Edition
Dec. 19th, 2007 07:18 pmLast week's TT went over well but left many questions in its wake. The number one question was on what other things I'd come across since some of the fetishes on last week's list were new to people. So this week I've decided to list a few of the other sexual paraphilias I've come across in research for stories and to satisfy my own curiosity. I'll provide links so you can look up more and sate your own curiosity in as much detail as you wish. (In order to avoid graphic content I've only provided the Wiki links which provides further links you may look up at your leisure.)
Let me point out that I'm using paraphilia in it's definition of "non-mainstream sexual practice or fantasy", not as an indication of deviance or psychological disorder which is another use. Now with that all cleared up, onward to 13 Paraphilias I Found Fascinating, Amusing or Downright Confusing.
Enjoy.
1. Acousticophilia: sexual arousal from certain sounds. ~ I've used this quite a bit in my fiction without ever knowing it had a name, so finding it was a delight. I specifically wrote it as sexual arousal from the sounds of pleasure from a partner(s); which may be its own thing that I just haven't found yet.
2. Algolagnia: sexual pleasure from pain. ~ This is not the same as Masochism which is the recurrent urge or behavior of wanting to be humiliated, beaten, bound, or otherwise made to suffer. The first is a matter of physical wiring where the endorphine rush is set off by pain in some the way it's set off by pleasure in others; while the second is psychological wiring of needing to feel punished or unworthy and then overcome that through suffering.
3. Amaurophilia: sexual arousal by a partner whom one is unable to see due to artificial means, such as being blindfolded or having sex in total darkness. ~ This is one of the first sexual games played by most couples just becoming adventurous. I don't know why it's so common according to scientists, but I personally believe it's the ability of the blindfolded person to fantasy and "be with anyone" while not needing to brave the idea of straying from their partner(s).
4. Dendrophilia: sexual attraction to trees and other large plants. ~ This is my favorite! I cracked up about this for days! Then I promptly wrote a dryad based erotic piece to get it out of my head. I love that this is a category and I'd be utterly delighted to hear from anyone who has it. I'll keep it completely confidential, promise. :)5. Forniphilia: sexual objectification in which a person's body is incorporated into a piece of furniture. ~ Yes, this is the formal name for the furniture play listed under number 13 Fantasy Roleplaying B of last week's list. I don't get it exactly, but I don't need to. As long as they're happy.
6. Human animal roleplay: sexual arousal by having oneself or a partner taking on the role of real or imaginary animal. ~ Also part of Fantasy Roleplaying B. I've know folks into this and the discussions have been incredibly interesting. I'll see about getting permission to repeat them here in the most general of terms.
7. Katoptronophilia: sexual arousal from having sex in front of mirrors ~ The 70's must have been heaven for people with this one. All of the mirrors on bedroom doors and ceilings would have just put them in a tizzy. Personally, too much information for me. I'm focused on the task at hand and having to watch and critique how I'm doing would completely throw me off. :)
8. Narratophilia: sexual arousal in the use of dirty or obscene words to a partner ~ Yeah, uh-huh, admit it. Some of you have this one in spades. Speak the truth, no shame here. It's not my thing but I understand the "naughty" factor that makes this arousing to people so I get where it comes from.
9. Pictophilia: sexual attraction to pictorial pornography or erotic art ~ If you don't know this person, you likely are this person.
10. Plushophilia: sexual attraction to stuffed animals and/or people dressed in animal costumes ~ All you furries out there recognize this one. As a writer of shape-shifter fiction I completely understand how this comes about under the aspect of furry art and furry stories. The actual furry costumes lose me. They seem so heavy and uncomfortable that my mind can't make the leap.
The psychological orgins make a certain sense to me as well. Many of the first sensate pleasures for children are associated with stuffed animals or the feeling of fur on skin, so it's easy to see how that could be imprinted upon and develope into Plushophilia/Furry Fetish.
11. Technophilia: sexual arousal from techno or technology ~ Every time I read this cyborgs come to mind. I just can't get it out of my head. Although I know this is more of an enthusiasm for technology which becomes a matter of seeking most sexual gratification through technology and then requiring technology to become sexually aroused. I don't know how prominent this is, but I know people in some intensive relationships with people they've only ever seen as avatars so take from that what you will.
12. Troilism: sharing a sexual partner with another person while in a Voyeur capacity. This can also inspire Zelophilia: which is sexual arousal from jealousy. ~ Triple bonus score!
13. Vorarephilia (also gynophagia): sexual attraction at the thought of being eaten by or eating another person or creature. It includes endosomataphillia—a sexual fetish of being within someone ~ Color me confused. I don't get it. I know it occurs very often in furry fiction, usually labeled unbirthing partially or completely. I suppose we live in a world where returning to the womb seems like a good idea at times, but the sexual aspect of this eludes me. If someone out there can explain from a personal context, by all means, click on my "About me" link and email me, I'm all ears.

Numbers 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and 12 for sure. Number two especially explains things a little more clearly to me. Seven is very new and surprised me.
LOL bet that research was ALL kinds of fun.

Date: 2007-12-20 04:34 am (UTC)7 was a very interesting one, but not new to me in that I've seen and read of instances. And the mirror above the bed was staple of the late 70's disco love machines out there. LOL
And yes, research was ALL kinds of fun. And this list isn't even half of what's out there.

Thanks for coming by Susan,

Date: 2007-12-20 04:54 am (UTC)Just think of all the things that didn't make the list. There were some I just couldn't bring myself to share because I don't want to think that they exist. But those above were either just to neat or too bizarre (#13) not to share. :)
