Thursday Thirteen 4th Edition
Sep. 6th, 2007 01:15 amHello Kittens,
Here we are again at another Thursday. We've done music playlists
, book series
, television series
, and have now come to movies
. But as usual, we're not looking at just any movies, but the ones I've watched over and over again and what they say about me. Enjoy the ride through my head, keep your hands and feet in the vehicle at all times, and most of all, try to relax.

Thirteen Movies I Know By Heart (Mostly)
1. Back to the Future ~ 1985 ~ I saw this movie more than any one person needed to see this movie. Ever. I had the worst crush on Michael J. Fox and this movie was an instant classic. If I had a quarter for every time I've said "Doc, you better back up, we don't have enough road to get up to 88!" "Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads." I could have retired to my own island ten years ago.
2. The Lost Boys ~ 1987 ~ Young, hip, Vampires, with the tagline "Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun being a Vampire." What was there not to love? It was directed by Joel Schumacher who also did Flatliners, (which would have come in at number 16 if we went that high), giving him two movies with Kiefer Sutherland in a starring role, and making Joel forever my buddy.
3. My Best Friend Is A Vampire ~ 1988 ~ I one of only 6 people who have actualy seen this this movie. It starred a young Robert Sean Leonard who I was deeply in love with from Dead Poet's Society. (Which came out the year after this, but I saw it first and just wanted to save poor Neil Perry)
4. Bram Stoker's Dracula ~ 1992 ~ Gary Oldman as Vlad. Nuff said.
5. Practical Magic ~ 1998 ~ Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters born into a family of witches. Gillian (Kidman) embraces her heritage despite all the taunts while Sally (Bullock) looks down her nose at it and only wants a "normal" life. When Gillian gets in the ultimate bad relationship and trouble too deep for mundane help, Sally calls on all her magic and unlikely friends to free her sister and make her peace with what she is. This movie also had the wonderful role of Aunt Frances played by Stockard Channing whom I love to pieces and have since her turn as Rizzo in Grease (which if it was Thursday 14, Grease would have made the list) and Dianne Wiest as Aunt Jet whom I've loved since The Lost Boys.
6. The Witches of Eastwick ~ 1987 ~ I can't even tell you how I came to see this the first time, but I loved it immediately. Alex(Cher), Sukie(Michelle Pfeiffer), and Jane(Susan Sarandon), are three best friends, frustrated and trapped in a small town where their lives have become redundant. One night they accidently conjure a devil played by Jack Nicholson that turns the entire town upside down. To let you know how much I love this movie, I can't even type about it without laughing. Despite the summoning a devil part, it's one of the best witchcraft and woman-power movies out there. I also happen to love Susan and Michelle so that just made it all the better.
7. Spirited Away ~ 2001 ~ This is an absolutely gorgeous animated film by academy award winner Hayao Miyazaki. It follows 10 year old Chihiro into the world of spirits after her she and her parents stumble upon an abandoned theme park while taking a shortcut to their new home. I won't go more into a recap, instead click the link so you can read at your leisure. It's a great movie and if you only get to try one on this list, this is the one I recommend above the other 12. The animation, the mythos, the growth of Chihiro all make it worth while.
8. The Matrix ~ 1999 ~ I watch the entire trilogy, but it's the first movie I sit down to again and again. The fight scenes, Keanu Reeves, the gun action sequences, Keanu, Laurence Fishborne, Keanu, are you seeing where I'm going with this? I loved the premise, the execution and everything about being swept up in the mythos of the Wachowski Brothers. Oh, and Keanu Reeves was in it.
9. Equilibrium ~ 2002 ~ I hated the tagline which was: Forget about the Matrix. That is the only bad thing I have to say about this movie. I loved the shooting scenes in The Matrix, but Equilibrium had the best gun-porn of any movie I had ever seen and have yet to see, hands down. Christian Bale, an emotionless society that's overcome war but forfeited their humanity, a resistance movement unwilling to give up art, music and love, and gun-porn. It had everything to be wonderful and it was. It was also graced by Taye Diggs, Angus MacFadyen, and Sean Bean.
10. Pitch Black ~ 2000 ~ Yes, I know. You were willing to give me The Matrix, you were even going to stretch and give me Equilibrium--gun-porn and all--but I've caught you with Pitch Black. Don't know what to say. Vin Diesel as Riddick just tripped my anti-hero trigger. A small band of survivors have to rely on a criminal (Riddick) to make their way to safety when they realize the deserted planet they've crashed on is infested with ravenous creatures that only come out in darkness. Did I mention the planet is about to go into a one month solar eclipse? It was rough and there are parts I still cover my eyes during, but I love this movie without reservation. It was a good, if brief turn for Claudia Black and introduced me to Radha Mitchell.
11. The Chronicles of Riddick ~ 2004 ~ The sequel to Pitch Black picking up five years after the escape from M6-117. Critics and others dogged this movie, but it had such a cult following the that dvd sold over a million copies it's first day of release, the video games did equally well I'm told. I don't care what anyone thinks about it, I loved it. It was the best extenuating adult mythos since Matrix. I loved the depth of the worlds, the relentlessness of the bad guys (though I had some issues), and the idea that when ruthless killers come after your planet, a slightly less ruthless killer that likes you may be your best bet. I was just there. Loved it. Own it. Watch It. Nothing more to say.
12. The Color Purple ~ 1985 ~ This Spielberg adaption of the Alice Walker novel was before its time. Starring Whoopie Goldberg and Danny Glover, and a supporting role by Oprah Winfrey, it spoke to sexism, racism, poverty, and the strength of self-esteem to you lift you out of even the deepest pit of abuse and despair. ((Yes, I know, you're still reeling from the switch, Riddick to The Color Purple seems like a stretch. But strangely it fits me just fine.))
13. Jesus Christ Superstar ~ 1973 ~ I was only 2 months old when this came out, so it took me a while to catch up with it. I honestly don't know what to say. There's no way around the explanation on this one save for a straight Jesus-Crush. I'll explain. I played Mary Magdalen in The Passon Play in 7th grade (which is the same thing as JCS). Jesus was played by an 8th grade boy I had a crush on. The Catholics and JCS fans already know where this goes. You can't play Magdalen to Jesus and not come out with a life-long crush. Then this movie comes up later and Ted Neely is this fine, 1970's Jesus. I was hooked. That and the music.
So there you go, from Marty McFly, to good Witches, to gun-porn, to Jesus in just 13 short steps. Decide as you will what you learned about me today. I had fun doing the list and hope you had fun reading it.

Date: 2007-09-06 12:46 pm (UTC)I watched the Lost Boys ad infinitum, too. Still would, if I had it laying around here (funnily enough, I was thinking of this movie the other night. The one vamp, the Death by Stereo dude, just might have influenced my fictional Mitchell Voss. How about that?).
See ya soon!

Hey Lost Boys was an addiction for me for a long time, that and the move Outsiders. Neither I have seen for ages.
Hey if we can drop the kids of with the guys for a night and make em go out, you and me should have a sexy vamp movie marthon some evening. There's some hot inspration for ya! (wink)

Date: 2007-09-06 03:46 pm (UTC)Can't say I like them all, though. For one, I really really REALLY don't get the Vin Diesel attraction. I just don't see it. But then, I never got the appeal of Van Damme either. Or Stallone, or any of these brain-dead, not-even-good-looking, actingwise totally incapable guys with exactly one facial expression. But that's probably just me... LOL
Absolutely love Equilibrium, though. I would have a hard time choosing between that and Matrix if I had to decide which one was better. (On the other hand, if you count in Matrix 2 and 3 Equilibrium wins hands down, because there at least I understood the plot.)
