Rambletastic
Oct. 16th, 2007 03:22 pmI've called, I've sent flowers, I've apologized time and again, and Hypnos is still snubbing me. Moody bastard! So since I can't sleep, and editing would be dangerous while running on fumes the way I am, I'm here to ramble at will. Yes this could take us anywhere so I'll kindly place an lj cut so as not to take up your entire Flist page. I's just so thoughtful. ;)
Vampire Shift Ramble Done
~X
Let's begin with work. This is on my mind because as tired and sleep deprived as I am, I'm grateful that I'm not sore and achy like I was last week. My body is adapting to all the moving and standing and I'm bouncing back quicker each time. Yay for adaptation.
I wanted to clear something up, as someone emailed me with condolences on having to settle for the job I have. My grumbles were not about the job itself, or the shift I work, or the numbers of hours I have a week. I, like most of you. hate the fact that I have to work outside the home rather than writing full time as I'd prefer. But I actually like my job. It's exactly what I was looking for, save for lower pay than I wanted. A) It's part time B) I show up, do my job, and leave without any extra responsibility C) I don't have to deal with co-workers D) My manager completely supports my writing and sees it as my career that my job will need to be scheduled around from time to time, and E) My schedule is set and for the hours I'm normally up rather than forcing me to adapt to a daytime schedule.
I was dealing with much suckage initially because I trained on all three shifts with a cascading schedule that left me wiped out and too sore to move. It was circumstantial, not a reflection on the job itself. (So all condolences should be sent for my poor sleeping ability rather than my job. In fact if anyone wants to start a fund to buy me a tempurpedic mattress, I'm not too proud to accept it. Queen sized if you please. *grin* )
What's the best thing about working the vampire shift in a retail enviroment? First, no co-workers, so no co-worker drama. If you knew how last year was for me, you'd be throwing confetti on my behalf. Second, and more entertaining, the people who come in at 2 am for gum and condoms. Followed by the people who are slow and deliberate in their movements and counting out their money because they're drunk off their asses and don't want to show it.
The gum and condom people are my favorite because they are primarily pink-cheeked, throat-clearing, continuously fidgeting, college aged men who didn't expect to have to ask a woman for condoms that night. It's only fair to add that I'm not quite 5'4, young looking, and tend to wear my hair in two ponytails , so the fact that they're scandalized isn't entirely their fault. As far as they know they might turn around and see me on campus the next day which is a blushworthy thing all its own.
Along with the blushing buyers are the confident questioners who ask me to recommend which brand they should get. I love them and have ended up talking condoms with strangers for as much as twenty minutes at a time. This is a job perk I didn't know was coming and one that leaves me quite delighted.
Third best thing, all the eye candy. I'm not saying there aren't scuzzy people who come by, cuz there are, I'm saying there's an unnatural amount of eye candy that comes in to abolish all thoughts of the scuzzy people. I have character descriptions to last me through next year just from this last month of work. Because I work weekends, I see all the people in their best, get-laid-gear, and feeling good with themselves from all the dancing, drinking and frolicking with friends. (Do people still frolic? They do, don't they? They should if they don't). Except for one crazy drunk, (yes, he's a drunk not an alcoholic, cuz alcoholics have to go to meetings), and one women who just doesn't like me and can't deign to speak to me, I like everyone who comes in and I love the story ideas I get while just moving through my night.
Another great thing about the job is that I get to write when I run out of things to do. I, however, have yet to run out of things to do which makes my night go rather swiftly. As I've said to others, some nights are over so quickly, I nearly pass myself on the way there already coming home. If I could just fall asleep after I get home from work, all would be well. (Again, not too proud for that mattress).
Hey, I think this worked. I feel like I might be able to catch a few hours of sleep if I lay down here soon. Perhaps Hypnos liked the flowers after all.
If you made it this far, thanks for staying with me for the ramble, it was fun and helpful. If you didn't make it this far, well then you don't know I'm talking to you so that would just make this rather weird so I'll just stop now. :)

Date: 2007-10-17 08:59 am (UTC)I made it to sleep finally at 11pm and was up again at 2:30 am. I tried to go back to sleep but I have some sort of sinus thing going on and finally gave up after an hour of nothing.
I'm going to sit up until about 5 and see if my sinuses feel any better or if I feel sleepier, whicher comes first. If neither come about, I'll just plan to be up until 9 am, medicate about 6 and hope to sleep until 1 pm.
Wish me luck.

I told Mandy the other day that I should record some of the convos I have with clients. Talk about material...heh.
